The central government has given the green light for a landmark infrastructure project: a six-lane greenfield expressway stretching from Raxaul in Bihar to Haldia in West Bengal. Estimated to cost around Rs 54,000 crore, this ambitious expressway will transform travel and trade across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal, with completion targeted by 2028.
Better Connectivity Across Three States
The expressway will pass through eight key districts in Bihar—Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Begusarai, Lakhisarai, Munger, Jamui, and Shivhar—before crossing into Jharkhand via Deoghar, Dumka, and Jamtara, ultimately reaching Haldia Port in West Bengal.
Beyond improving regional connectivity, it will also enhance access to Indian ports for neighboring Nepal.
Travel Time to Reduce by Four Hours
Currently, the journey from Raxaul to Haldia takes 17 to 18 hours. With the new expressway, this will be cut down to just 13 hours, offering a faster, smoother ride. It will facilitate quicker movement of industrial and agricultural goods from these states to global markets via Haldia Port, while also easing travel to Kolkata and Patna.
Access-Controlled Road for Safety and Speed
Designed as an access-controlled highway, vehicles will enter and exit only at designated points. This will ensure steady speeds, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance road safety.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is actively overseeing the project to ensure timely completion. Once operational, this expressway promises to be a game-changer, fueling economic growth and strengthening regional ties in eastern India.
