As Tamil Nadu plans to build a greenfield airport in Hosur, near Bengaluru, the Centre is reportedly ready to approve another airport in Parandur, Tamil Nadu.
In addition to Parandur, the Centre is also considering the clearance for two other greenfield airports in Kota, Rajasthan, and Puri, Odisha, according to a recent report by The Businessline.
The Parandur airport will be the second airport serving Chennai, potentially easing the city’s increasing air traffic. If approved, construction is expected to take at least three years to complete, as per Oneindia.
These airports are part of India’s Greenfield Airports (GFA) policy, which involves a two-step approval process:
- Site Clearance: Assessing the location for technical feasibility.
- In-Principle Approval: Reviewing a detailed project report (DPR) and a techno-economic feasibility study.
Currently, the Parandur, Kota, and Puri airports are in the second stage of this approval process. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), along with agencies like the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Home and Defence Ministries, are considering granting the approvals.
