Thane-Borivali Tunnel Project Work Progress & Latest Updates .
The Thane-Borivali tunnel, currently under construction, is set to transform travel between these two key locations in Mumbai.
Once completed, it will be the longest tunnel in the state, surpassing the ongoing Airoli-Katai road tunnel by 1.7 km.
At present, the only route between Borivali and Thane is the crowded Ghodbunder Road, which can take a significant amount of time. With no direct connection between the two areas, the Thane-Borivali tunnel is much-needed to reduce travel times.
Recently, @cbdhage uploaded images on X of the ongoing construction work thereby giving us a glimpse of the work progress.
Thane-Borivali Tunnel Project: Work Progress
As per the images, we can see the digging work going on with the help of JCB excavators.
As of March 2025, the first of four massive TBMs has cleared its factory acceptance test and is scheduled to arrive at the Thane launch shaft site in April. As per TOI, tunneling work is expected to commence before the onset of the monsoon season, marking a significant advancement in the project.
Talking about the TBMs, they will carve out twin tunnels beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), connecting Ekta Nagar in Borivali with Tikuji-Ni-Wadi in Manpada, Thane. Each tunnel will have three lanes and will reach a depth of up to 23 metres underground.
Furthermore, the project has received wildlife clearance from the National Board for Wildlife, as per Homebazaar.com. However, approval from the Regional Empowered Committee of the Union Environment Ministry in Nagpur is still pending. A sub-committee has been established to assess the project’s environmental impact, particularly concerning the SGNP’s biodiversity.
Upon completion, the tunnel is expected to reduce the travel distance between Thane and Borivali from 23 km to 12 km, cutting travel time from over an hour to approximately 15 minutes. This improvement is projected to alleviate congestion on key routes such as Ghodbunder Road and the Western Express Highway.
Thane-Borivali Tunnel Project: Expected Launch Timeline
The Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel is slated for completion by May 2028, with construction activities currently progressing as per the planned timeline.
