The latest Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings 2025, released on June 18, feature four Indian universities in the top 100. Leading the Indian institutions is Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, ranked 41st worldwide. It is followed by Lovely Professional University (48), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (56), and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (96).
Out of 2,526 universities across 130 countries evaluated for their social and environmental impact, only four Indian institutions featured in the top 100, and just two in the top 50.
These global rankings evaluate how universities contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate action, quality education, gender equality, and more.
At the global level, Australia’s Western Sydney University maintained its top spot for the fourth year in a row. It’s followed by the University of Manchester (UK) in second place and South Korea’s Kyungpook National University in third.
One clear trend this year is the growing dominance of Asian universities. Over half of the top 50 positions are held by institutions in Asia. Notably, 10 of the 17 SDG categories are now topped by Asian universities, showing a strong regional focus on sustainability.
Among them, Indonesia’s Universitas Airlangga, which shares the 9th global rank, has been recognised as the most sustainable university from an emerging economy.
Malaysia’s Universiti Sains Malaysia leads in three SDG categories, including No Poverty and Partnerships for the Goals. Indonesia’s Universitas Airlangga, ranked joint ninth, is the highest-placed university from an emerging economy.
This year, eight new countries made their debut in the rankings: Botswana, Burkina Faso, El Salvador, Estonia, Maldives, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, and Senegal.
