Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is gearing up for a major upgrade to its main runway to boost passenger safety and streamline operations.
Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, the recarpeting work will kick off on January 14, 2025, and is expected to be finished by March 29.
According to the Financial Express, the work will take place every day from 9 AM to 6 PM, with airlines adjusting their flight schedules to avoid disruptions during these hours.
To ensure minimal impact on passengers and airlines, the airport has devised a comprehensive plan. “We will implement a thorough strategy to maintain services and reduce any inconvenience during this period,” said TIAL.
The airport’s runway, which spans 3,374 metres in length and 60 metres in width, was last recarpeted in 2017. This time, the project will involve resurfacing a total area of 348,000 square metres, including the runway and taxiways.
The upgrade will also see the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system switched from halogen to energy-efficient LED, new airfield signage installed, and stop bar lights introduced.
The airport will manage up to 96 air traffic movements per day during the upgrade, with some flights adjusted. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for any changes to their flight schedules.
