A dedicated PlayStation fan has taken an unusual step to combat rising subscription fees, spending more than $2,000 to secure 24 years of PlayStation Plus membership in one go.
Reddit user “On_Reddit_In_Class” explained their decision to stack subscriptions through 2048 to counter ongoing price increases. They believe it will offer long-term savings, especially given the continued price hikes across subscription services.
Lads, I did it. Subscribed to PS Plus until 2048.

Will The Bet Pay Off?
PlayStation Plus Essential, the basic annual membership, currently costs $79.99, bringing the price of 24 years to around $1,920. But in a surprising twist, Sony offered a significant 89 per cent discount for On_Reddit_In_Class to upgrade to a Premium membership. Instead of the typical $1,889.75, the Premium upgrade cost just $199.99, putting their grand total at $2,119.75.
Sony’s last price hike came in September 2023, raising the Essential tier from $59.99 to $79.99 annually. At the time, the company justified the increase as a way to sustain quality games and added benefits.
But with similar subscription models like Xbox Game Pass also raising fees — doubling its original $9.99 price since 2017 — the strategy of pre-purchasing extended subscriptions could be a money-saver for avid gamers.
Considering that the purchase was made for 24 years, it’s pretty safe to speculate that this bet would eventually pay off.

The next batch of PS Plus Essential games is on the horizon, promising a fresh selection of titles for November 2024, and it looks like there could be more excitement in store. PlayStation has been maintaining a steady flow of solid game offerings, following a model similar to Xbox in providing a small yet enticing library of games for subscribers to download and keep as long as they maintain their PS Plus Essential subscription. It’s an added bonus for console players who continue to pay for online access—an edge over PC players who skip that charge.
In recent months, PS Plus has been quite generous, with the October drop featuring big names like WWE 2K24, Dead Space, and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus, alongside the previous month’s surprise day-one release of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions. November promises more of the same, though the exact titles remain a mystery. However, there’s a pattern we can use to make an educated guess: looking back at games released in the same month a year prior.
