‘Trump Invited Me, But I Declined As…’: PM Modi On Why He Turned Down US Visit Invite

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the reason why he declined Donald Trump’s invitation for a visit to the United States was that it was important for him to instead “visit the land of Mahaprabhu”.

While addressing a rally in Bhubaneswar, PM Modi said he had received a call from the US President while he was in Canada, asking him to come to Washington for dinner and talks. However, he “politely declined his invitation” and returned to India for his scheduled visit to Odisha on June 20.

“Just two days ago, I was in Canada for the G7 summit and the US President Trump called me. He said, since you have come to Canada, go via Washington, we will have dinner together and talk. He extended the invitation with great insistence,” PM Modi told the crowd.

“I told the US President, thank you for the invitation. It is very important for me to go to the land of Mahaprabhu and hence I politely declined his invitation and your love and devotion to Mahaprabhu brought me to this land,” he added.

PM Modi is visiting Odisha to participate in the first anniversary function of the BJP’s maiden government in the state.

On the occasion, he launched 105 development projects valued at over Rs 18,600 crores and flagged off new trains, including the first passenger train to Boudh district during his visit to the state. He also unveiled the “Odisha Vision Document” and felicitated ‘Lakhpati Didis’.
