Ubisoft Layoffs: Ubisoft has announced the permanent closure of its studio in Leamington, UK, along with job cuts at three other offices — Ubisoft Düsseldorf, Stockholm, and Reflections, reported Eurogamer. This decision will affect a total of 185 employees across the four locations, as the gaming giant continues its efforts to streamline operations and reduce costs.
The Leamington studio, known for its contributions to major titles like Far Cry 5 and Tom Clancy’s The Division, previously worked under Activision before being acquired by Ubisoft. Despite the success of these projects, the studio has been shut down as part of Ubisoft’s broader cost-cutting measures.
Why Is Ubisoft Shutting Down Lemington Studio?
This announcement comes at a challenging time for Ubisoft, which has faced mounting financial and operational pressures. The release of Star Wars Outlaws, a project that involved Ubisoft Leamington, fell short of sales expectations, leading to further scrutiny of the company’s performance.
Additionally, Ubisoft’s upcoming title, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has seen multiple delays but is now scheduled for release on March 20, 2025.
As per Eurogamer, in its statement, Ubisoft emphasised that the closures and layoffs are part of its strategy to prioritise key projects and optimise resources. The company recently announced the upcoming shutdown of servers for XDefiant in mid-2025, citing challenges in profitability for free-to-play games. Mark Rubin, executive producer of XDefiant, highlighted the financial realities influencing such decisions, aligning with Ubisoft’s broader efforts to improve cash flow.
Speculation around Ubisoft’s future has also intensified. Reports suggest that a potential split between Ubisoft and Tencent could be on the horizon, with Tencent possibly increasing its stake in Ubisoft’s portfolio.
