President of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Philemon Yang arrived in India on Tuesday at the invitation of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar for a visit till February 7.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed on X, “Warm welcome to @UN_PGA Mr. Philemon Yang to India. An opportunity to enhance India-UN engagement in the lead up to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations.”

Yang, who previously served as Prime Minister of Cameroon, assumed office as UNGA President on September 10, 2024. Under his presidency, the United Nations adopted “A Pact for the Future”, a vision document aimed at fostering multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow.

UNGA President Yang To Call On President Droupadi Murmu
During his visit, Jaishankar and Yang will discuss key multilateral and regional issues of mutual interest. Yang is also scheduled to call on President Droupadi Murmu.
Apart from his engagements in New Delhi, Yang will visit Bengaluru, where he is scheduled to tour Infosys and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The MEA stated that Yang will interact with experts on India’s innovations in sustainability, digital public infrastructure, and other emerging fields.
Jaishankar had met Yang in New York in September 2024 and assured him of India’s full support to his vision of unity in diversity, peace, human sustainability, and dignity for all. Sharing a post on X, Jaishankar had stated, “Pleased to meet new UNGA President Philemon Yang today in New York. Assured him of India’s full support to his vision of Unity in Diversity, Peace, Human Sustainability and Dignity for everyone everywhere.”
Yang had also acknowledged India’s contributions, writing on X, “I had the pleasure to receive India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar today. We discussed the priorities and key issues for UNGA79, and building on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future. I also appreciated India’s role in advancing the interests of the Global South.”
The visit is expected to strengthen India’s engagement with the United Nations and further discussions on key global issues.
