UP Officials Launch Campaign Against Fake Helmets Amid Rise In Road Accidents – News18

The Uttar Pradesh government has started a strong campaign against selling and using fake helmets.

People need to be educated about the importance of using real helmets.

To reduce the rising number of two wheeler accidents, the Indian government had made a rule that every rider should only use BSI certified helmets. However, in Uttar Pradesh, many sellers have been caught giving riders fake or low quality helmets, leading to many deaths each year. To stop this problem, the UP government has started a strong campaign against selling and using fake helmets. This action comes after reports showed that there were 46,000 road accidents and 24,000 deaths linked to riders without good head protection in 2024 alone.

As per HT Auto, Rajeev Kapur, President of the Wheeler Helmet Manufacturers Association of India (2WHMA) and Managing Director of Steelbird Helmets, praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Transport Commissioner BN Singh for their decision towards safety. He said, “Uttar Pradesh’s leadership is commendable. Fake helmets are silent killers, and removing them from circulation is a major step in protecting lives. This bold stance sets a powerful precedent. We urge other states to follow suit.”

“Road safety isn’t a state issue, it’s a national crisis. The time to act is now. We are ready to support any state willing to join this mission to ensure only BIS-certified helmets reach the market,” Kapur added.

For years, 2WHMA has warned about the risks of using cheap, quality helmets that are not certified. The President of 2WHMA believes that just making strict rules is not enough. People also need to be educated about the importance of using real and safe helmets. He also believes that helmet makers must be held responsible for the quality of their products. To bring the change, Kapur adds that the government, helmet companies and common citizens must work together as a team.

Earlier this year, officials in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, asked both government and private companies to make sure their workers wear seatbelts and helmets while travelling. The Assistant Regional Transport Officer, Siyaram Verma, told ANI that since road accidents are very common, the new initiative was introduced to help prevent serious injuries and save lives. He also shared that many more people have now started wearing helmets, which he feels is a positive sign and a big step forward for road safety.

In India, the ISI mark shows that a helmet is safe and approved by government. But many fake helmets either don’t have this mark or have a poor copy that can be easily removed. Genuine helmets cost more since they follow safety standards and cushioned properly. To stay safe, it’s always recommended to buy helmets from trusted shops or certified dealers instead of roadside stalls.
