The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert 20,000 lead-acid-powered e-rickshaws to lithium-ion battery technology

This partnership supports India’s clean mobility and net-zero ambitions, opening opportunities for collaboration with policymakers, urban planners, and investors.

Urja Mobility, a leader in electric vehicle (EV) solutions, has teamed up with Eastman Auto and Power Ltd. to transform India’s urban transport sector.

The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to convert 20,000 lead-acid-powered e-rickshaws to lithium-ion battery technology, marking a major step toward sustainable mobility.

This partnership combines Urja Mobility’s battery leasing model with Eastman’s advanced lithium-ion technology to deliver both economic and environmental benefits:

  • 57 Percent Boost in Driver Earnings: Reduced downtime and lower maintenance costs mean more money for e-rickshaw drivers.
  • 40 Percent Reduction in Per-Kilometre Costs: Operational expenses drop below Rs 1 per km, making electric travel more affordable.
  • 90 GWh Electricity Saved Every 3 Years: This is enough power to run over 1 million homes each year.
  • 74,070 Tonnes of CO₂ Cut Every 3 Years: A significant contribution to India’s carbon neutrality goals.

One of the project’s key strengths is Urja Mobility’s vast data network, which tracks over 3 billion kilometres of real-world EV performance across India. This data allows for continuous optimisation of battery life, fleet efficiency, and urban mobility solutions.

Pankaj Chopra, Co-founder and Director of Urja Mobility, stated, “By lowering costs, increasing driver earnings, and reducing carbon emissions, we are not just electrifying vehicles—we are driving economic empowerment and environmental impact at scale. With data-driven innovation at our core, we aim to make clean mobility more accessible, efficient, and future-ready for millions of Indians.”

Shekhar Singal, Managing Director of Eastman Auto and Power Ltd., added, “This partnership marks a significant milestone for Eastman Auto and Power Ltd. as we join forces with Urja Mobility to accelerate the growth of electric mobility in India.”

Aligned with India’s net-zero and clean mobility objectives, the partnership paves the way for further collaboration with policymakers, urban planners, and investors.
