United States President Donald Trump is going to announce new tariffs on Monday. Later this week, the US will impose 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports, including from Canada and Mexico and other import duties as well.
According to an Associated Press (AP) report, Trump said that any steel coming to the US is going to have a 25% tariff while speaking to reporters. When asked about aluminium, he responded, “aluminium, too” will be subject to the trade penalties.
Trump also reiterated that he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” — likely on Tuesday or Wednesday — meaning the US would impose import duties on products from countries that placed tariffs on American goods. “If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” he was quoted by AP.
Trump’s remarks highlight his readiness to threaten or impose import taxes. This time, tariffs were introduced much earlier in his presidency compared to his previous term, when he initially focused on tax cuts and deregulation. He has suggested that import taxes serve as leverage to secure concessions on issues like immigration and as a revenue source to reduce the government’s budget deficit.
On Sunday, Trump did not offer any details about the steel and aluminium duties, or the reciprocal tariffs. Previously, Trump, who threatened 25% import taxes on all goods from Canada and Mexico, agreed to a 30-day pause on his tariff threats against the two largest trading partners after they took steps to appease his concerns about border security and drug trafficking.
At the same time, he proceeded to add 10% duties on imports from China.
However, on Friday, Trump announced that he would delay tariffs on the millions of small packages—often from fast-fashion companies like Temu and Shein—until customs officials determine how to implement them. These small shipments have previously been exempted from tariffs.
