Our ancestors thoughtfully designed every aspect of a house, considering both its structure and the Vastu principles behind it. Today, people often select doors based primarily on design and durability. However, in earlier times, even the number of door panels held deeper significance.

You may have noticed that most old houses featured double-leafed doors. While many assume this was purely for strength or aesthetics, there was a significant astrological reason behind it. These doors were believed to reflect the presence and influence of Rahu and Ketu, two celestial bodies known in astrology for bringing challenges and disruptions. To counteract their effects, specific remedies were traditionally followed.

The Link Between Double-Leafed Doors and Malefic Planets

According to Bhopal-based astrologer and Vastu consultant Pandit Hitendra Kumar Sharma, Rahu and Ketu are considered malefic or “sinful” planets. Their influence can lead to mental stress, unexpected obstacles, and emotional instability. In ancient belief systems, double-leafed doors were thought to block the negative energy associated with these planets, but only if certain rituals were observed. Below are certain remedies to follow to control the influence of these sinful planets.

Use of Two Coloured Threads

If the main entrance of your home has double-leafed doors, take one red thread and one black thread. Tie the red thread on the right panel and the black thread on the left panel. This simple step is believed to ward off negative energy and maintain a positive atmosphere inside the home.

Write ‘Shubh-Labh’ In Red Letters

On the double door, write ‘Shubh’ and ‘Labh’ (meaning ‘Auspiciousness’ and ‘Profit’) in red. If using stickers, ensure they are not torn or faded. If they wear off, replace or rewrite them immediately. This ritual is said to promote happiness, prosperity, and peace in the household.

Light A Lamp With Mustard Oil And Vermilion

Whether the double-leaf door is at the main entrance or another room, light a lamp near it every evening. Use mustard oil with a small amount of orange vermilion (sindoor). Mustard oil is associated with Shani (Saturn) and vermilion with Hanuman ji. Together, they help neutralise the inauspicious effects of Rahu and Ketu.
