A water taxi service is set to make waves in Mumbai’s transport system, as CIDCO and the Maharashtra Ports Department plan a new route connecting South Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.
This new mode of transport promises to cut down travel time from over an hour to just 40 minutes.
The water taxis will run from a new jetty near Radio Club in Colaba, as per Hindustan Times.
At present, the road journey from South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai Airport takes around 60 to 75 minutes via the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). The planned electric water taxis aim to save more than 30 minutes, especially during peak hours.
The idea comes after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stressed the need for multi-modal access to the new airport during a meeting held on 24 April. He called for connections by road, rail, metro, and water transport to ensure smooth travel for passengers.
CIDCO’s Managing Director, Vijay Singhal, presented the plan to Ports Minister Nitesh Rane in a meeting on Monday. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), part of the ports department, will take charge of building a new jetty near the airport to allow direct water access.
Minister Rane has instructed his team to create a formal proposal for the jetty and terminal, and to begin the approval process with airport authorities.
With approvals on the way and construction plans moving forward, this new water taxi route could soon offer Mumbai residents and travellers a faster, cleaner, and more scenic journey to the airport.
