Many people are unaware of other charges that the Railways collects from passengers during the reservation process but does not refund when the ticket is cancelled. (News18 Hindi)

Around 20% of people who make train reservations, online or offline, cancel their tickets later and the money is refunded to their account. However, many people are unaware that, in addition to ticket cancellation fees, there are other charges that the Railways collects from passengers during the reservation process but does not refund when the ticket is cancelled. What are these charges?

Dilip Kumar, Executive Director Information and Publicity of Railway Board, says that in addition to the train fare, passengers are also charged reservation fees, superfast charges, and GST at the time of booking. When you cancel the ticket, the fixed charges based on the class are deducted from the amount you paid, but the reservation charges and GST are not refunded. Moreover, the superfast charges are also non-refundable.

Ticket Cancellation Charges

If an RAC/waiting ticket is cancelled, a cancellation charge of Rs 60 per passenger will be levied. If a confirmed ticket is cancelled 48 hours before the departure of the train, the cancellation charge is:

Rs 240 for AC/Executive Chair Car,

Rs 200 for AC 2 Tier,

Rs 180 for AC 3 Tier,

Rs 120 for Sleeper Class and;

Rs 60 for Second Class per person.

Reservation Charges As Per Class

Reservation charges are levied differently as per class:

Rs 15 for Second Class,

Rs 20 for Sleeper,

Rs 40 for AC Chair Car, AC Economy and AC Third,

Rs 50 for AC Second and;

Rs 60 for AC First and Executive Class.

If you have made a reservation in First AC and cancel it, then Rs 60 and GST will not be refunded. Indian Railways takes this charge from you in exchange for convenience. Apart from this, a cancellation charge is also deducted from your amount.

Suburban Charge In Suburban Trains Too

Apart from normal trains, if you make a reservation on suburban and local trains, then a reservation charge is taken from you.

Rs 15 has to be paid in second class,

Rs 20 in sleeper class and;

Rs 50 in first class.
