Which States Will Go To Polls During Caste Census 2027?


Caste Census: The Central Government announced on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) that the caste census process will begin on March 1, 2027. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the population census-2027, along with the caste census, will be conducted in two phases. Elections will also be held in several states when the government conducts the census.

The census will be held in October 2026 in the non-synchronous snowy areas of the Union Territory of Ladakh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in a statement, said, “As per the provisions of Section 3 of the Population Census Act 1948, the notification for conducting the census with the above-mentioned dates will be published in the official gazette on 16.06.2025.”

Which States Will Have Elections During Caste Census?

The census will begin in October 2026 in the hilly states of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, while the rest of the country will have it in March 2027. No elections are scheduled in any of the states where the census is to be conducted in 2026. However, elections are to be held in several states in 2027. These include elections in Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Manipur in February 2027.

Elections are also to be held in the largest state of the country, Uttar Pradesh, in February/March 2027. After this, elections are to be held in Himachal Pradesh in 2027 and in Gujarat in December 2027.

Apart from this, elections for the posts of President and Vice President are also to be held in 2027. The election for the post of President will be held in July 2027 and for the Vice President in August 2027. At the same time, elections are to be held in Assam, West Bengal, and Puducherry in March-April 2026, while elections are to be held in Tamil Nadu in April/May and in Kerala in May 2026.
