Kiwi physiotherapist Angela Cullen made headlines after she was spotted with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton ahead of his first pre-season testing with Ferrari, after a massive move from Mercedes.
Hamilton had worked with Cullen almost nine years back while at Mercedes, with the former acknowledging the positive impact Cullen had on his performances.
Hamilton and Cullen parted two years back, after seven years of working together, but now they will resume what had been a brilliant partnership.
The 50-year-old Cullen is a Kiwi physiotherapist and a former field hockey player as well. From 2015 to 2023, she worked for Mercedes and had her claim to fame during her work with Hamilton.
Born in Devenport in Auckland, Cullen played hockey at an international level for New Zealand when she was 15 and continued till 21 years of age.
Cullen has worked with some of the biggest names, at the English Institute of Sport in London as a senior physio, supporting the British Olympic team, UK Athletics and the British triathlon team as well as other corporate clients.
After the death of Aki Hintsa, a mentor to Hamilton, Cullen became the latter’s physiotherapist and assistant.
Cullen has now joined Hamilton’s Project 44 company, which the latter made to help with his new era at Ferrari and other business interests, as team physiotherapist.
Cullen, who had been working with Kiwi driver Marcus Armstrong in IndyCar, will attend the races beside Hamilton.
“People for sure won’t understand it, naturally, because they see it from a distance, but she has been one of the greatest things that’s happened to me in my life,” Hamilton had said of Cullen five years ago.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with a lot of people and she’s the single hardest-working woman that I get to be around,” Hamilton added.
The news of Hamilton reuniting with Cullen came in the week the former started his new life at Ferrari, the former appearing at the team’s Italian headquarters in Maranello for the first time last month.
“She’s focused, selfless, and she makes my weekends peaceful. Every day I wake up, whatever time it is, she’s just positive, never a single day has she been negative, so that’s very, very important,” Hamilton had said.
