Fastag Annual Pass Coverage Limit: Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday announced the launch of the FASTag-based Annual Pass for private vehicle owners across India. Priced at Rs 3,000, the new system will be enforced from August 15 and is aimed at making travel on national highways smoother, faster, and more cost-effective.

The Annual Pass allows up to 200 toll-free trips on national highways throughout one year from the date of activation. The scheme is aimed at easing the commuting experience for private vehicle owners who travel frequently and currently face toll charges every 60 kilometres.

However, in Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru, there are toll plazas within the city.

Mumbai toll plazas

The major toll plazas in the city include the one on Bandra-Worli Sea Link, entry/exit plazas at Dahisar, Mulund (LBS Marg and Eastern Express highway) and Airoli. There is also a toll to enter/exit the Coastal Road. The pay for these depends on the type of vehicle and the distance travelled; these toll prices range from Rs 45 to Rs 500.

A major change implemented in September 2023 is the exemption of toll charges for light motor vehicles entering Mumbai city at the five key entry/exit points, aimed at easing traffic congestion and lowering pollution. Other vehicles are still charged as per standard rates.

Toll plazas in Bengaluru

In Bengaluru, several key toll plazas operate along the outskirts and major highways, including Nelamangala, Devanahalli, Chokkanahalli, Hulikunte, Somanahalli, and Nalluru Devanahalli. The charges range from Rs 65 to approximately Rs 400 for different vehicles, depending on the journey. Return trip discounts and monthly passes are commonly available at most Bengaluru toll points to ease regular travel costs.

Chennai

In Chennai, notable toll plazas include Paranur, Vanagaram, and Surapattu. Each of them has different charges depending on the type of vehicle. Across the average maximum rates overall, monthly rates average Rs. 4,000 with average basic rates approximately Rs. 50. The average basic rates for a single trip average Rs. 115 with maximum and minimum trips averaging Rs. 695 and Rs. 50.

Kolkata & Delhi

Kolkata and Delhi are surrounded by toll plazas on key expressways and highways, but do not have any within the city.

Hyderabad

In and around Hyderabad, there are several toll plazas along the Outer Ring Road and other highways with varying rates depending on the vehicle type and whether it is a single or return journey. Some key toll plazas include Panthangi, Kamkole, and Kadthal.

Will FASTag Annual Pass work within cities?

The FASTag annual pass is primarily intended for use on National Highways and Expressways. It won’t be applicable on roads and expressways under the purview of the states.
