The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, comedian Samay Raina, and others over the former’s objectionable remarks on parents and sex at a comedy show.
Social media influencers Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh, and Ashish Chanchlani have also been summoned by the women’s panel along with the producers of the comedy show, India’s Got Latent.
“The National Commission for Women (NCW) has expressed strong concern over the derogatory and racist comments reportedly made by YouTubers on the show India’s Got Latent,” said the NCW in a press release.
“The Commission has taken serious note of the vulgar and offensive remarks made by content creators such as Ranveer Allahabadia, Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh, and Ashish Chanchlani, as well as the show’s producers, Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra,” it said.
“These comments, which have sparked widespread public outrage, violate the dignity and respect owed to every individual, particularly in a society that upholds equality and mutual respect,” the release stated further.
The commission has directed the abovementioned people to appear before it in person on February 17 at its office in New Delhi.
Allahbadia, popularly known as Beer Biceps, recently appeared on the show — hosted by Raina — and asked a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents having sex all your life or join in once and stop it forever?”
The remark fueled widespread nationwide outrage with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warning against towing the line of freedom of speech.
Earlier on Tuesday, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar also condemned Allahabadia’s remark. “The language they have used is obscene and it should not be used. We are very serious regarding this and we have written to the IT minister to create a set of rules for such platforms to control it…,” she said while speaking to reporters in Odisha.
